Justin Vernon's remix of "Get Up, Get Out" has a bright, cold feeling to it, something like being in a spacious white-walled auditorium with your eyes closed. The chamber echoes that roll away from the piano are clean and detached, but when Ivan Howard sings it's like he's sitting right next to you – like he's your best (or only) friend. Vernon stripped this track down into an eerie, echoing territory, using the minimalist approach to pull off a mix that is equal parts intimate and solitary.
Thank God for Herbaliser for connecting me to the era I wish I was alive for. "You're Not All That" is a straight throwback jam, hitting those uptempo soul / funk lines with vintage flair. If you're fond of telling people that "they don't make music like they used to," you've got everything you need here - poppy guitar riffs, nasty horn breaks, and retro turntable action - to bury that argument, at least for 3 minutes and 37 seconds. The enthusiasm for these guys around the office is unanimous.
Yeah yeah, so a few days ago I just made a new Staff Picks playlist, which I branded as "backlash to all the blog house that's been flooding my senses lately." Today we're featuring a Lifelike remix of "This Boy's in Love", which is about as electro and bloggy as you can get. That must make me something of a hypocrite, right? Who cares! I eat my words, and in this case my words they taste like crunchy, delicious synthesizers (with a side of blippy body-moving). Enjoy the jam.
