#17 The Knife
Illusive brother and sister duo from Stockholm, Sweden The Knife is one of the most unique and intriguing electronica groups around. Their spectacular 2006 album Silent Shout catapulted them to international fame, winning them countless awards (although they never show up to collect them). The group remains shrouded in secrecy, often donning Venetian bird masks, preferring instead to offer us a brilliant and complex body of work full of dark mysterious characters.
The Knife is all about the killer synth riffs - like a classic new wave band, but more intense, more cerebral than their electro-clash counterparts. Karin Dreijer Andersson’s voice is at once haunting and comforting, breathy and visceral, often singing in high-pitched childlike voices, while Olof backs her up taking on various sinister personalities. Together they capture the energetic feel of a good rock band, much like Depeche Mode, with classic laser-beam techno synthesizers and slick, crisp old school drum machines. The result is polished and futuristic yet organic and lyrical.
At first refusing to play concerts, The Knife is now known for their surreal theatrical performances, complete with creepy masks and sci-fi light show, like a Kraftwork concert in a David Lynch film. The band releases their own material independently on Rabid Records, a small label started by Karin while fronting her first band Honey is Cool. Honey is Cool gained a bit of notoriety in Sweden through the late nineties, but broke up in 2000. Karin has just debuted her new solo project called Fever Ray with tracks available for download on Beatport and iTunes. The full length Fever Ray album is due in March.
