As far as single-album artists go, Justice attained what is far and away the highest position on this list. Of course, that album hit #33 over on our Top 100 Albums list, so what's left to say about the production duo? Well, a fair bit. We'd be remiss not to mention their remix work, the quantity of which swarms and overruns the amount of songs on their album proper. They've done Soulwax, Daft Punk, MGMT, et.al., but they're most notorious for their handling of Simian's "Never Be Alone." Famously, they didn't win the remix contest for which their reworking, "We Are Your Friends," was an entry, but the opening three seconds of that track is one of the most recognizable cuts in all of this decade's dance music.
So: a good album and a bunch of output in the interim earns you an honor as one of the decade's best artists? On paper it seems a little slim, but as we kept nudging Justice's post-it note higher and higher up on our messy Top 100 wall in the bProp office, it became clear we'd have to discuss why they had left such a strong impression in so little time. Consensus: if you look around right now, Justice is electronic music. No, it's not Ed Banger; it's not Justice + a handful of others…it's these two dudes alone. Their influence has spread like dancing mania across the world, and every subsequent electronic artist has been trying to slice off a portion of the crunchy, compressed, metallic sound that's become so ubiquitous. No musical act in the past five years has had such a singular and complete grip on their genre. We don't know when the next major trend will kick in, but it may just be the case that Justice sets that one as well; whether they have staying power remains to be seen.
