Röyksopp formed in the late '90s in Bergen, Norway, becoming a leader of the downbeat, electro-groove trend known as Bergen Wave. With their debut, 2001's Melody A.M., Royksopp was catapulted into the forefront of chillout music, capturing the torch from other well-known downbeat pioneers such as Groove Armada. Melody A.M. became the standard for post-club, wind-down music and blasted from many a stereo system as the drugs wore off and the sun rose in the beginning of the decade. Royksopp's sophomore release came four years later and continued on the same path, but was a bit more club-oriented. 2005's The Understanding was more upbeat than Royksopp's debut, emphasizing rhythm slightly more than melody, but maintained that subdued, chillout vibe that launched them. More than any other artist this decade, Royksopp's music has chilled the warm blood of partygoers as they wander out of the clubs and settle down in their livingrooms, preparing them for morning slumber. Stay tuned to our Top 100 Albums feature to see which one of Royksopp's albums made the list.
