The Herbaliser was formed by Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba in London back in the '90s. They began with a straight sampling approach, but quickly shifted to blaze a trail into performer created samples. This process began with Blow Your Headphones in the late 90s and was fully realized with Session One, in 2000. (Session One was actually an instrumental rerecording of earlier electronic material.) This would prove to be an influential style swing that Herbaliser extensively continues to define.
The quintessential funky beats band, Herbaliser was also influential in the blurring of lines between hip hop, jazz, and electronic music; a 1990s West Coast music trend that they significantly refined during the last decade.
Over the years The Herbaliser has worked with key artists such as Jean Grae, Roots Manuva, Blade, Phi-Life Cypher, Cappo, Bahamadia, Katerine, Dream Warriors and MF DOOM. They have produced 7 amazing LPs on the influential Ninja Tune label, where they have been one of the most notable artists in residence (although, they recently left the label). The Herbaliser are no senior slumpers either, Same As It Never Was, their most recent effort, is also one of their best and most sophisticated albums.
