Lorin Ashton is the center of Bassnectar, the Berkeley based electronic collective he describes as "omni-tempo maximalism." Maximalism appears to characterize both a reaction to the more stripped down styles of the '00s, as well as being a literal expression of Bassnectar's sink-and-all approach to song construction.
Bassnectar and his various collaborators build on diverse styles that include - to name a few - dub, trip hop hip, breaks, glitch hop, ambient, and pounding chemical beats. Ashton even fuses in jazz and bluegrass influences. Somehow this crazy conflation works. Bassnectar manages to arrive at a sound that is refreshingly unique and new.
His gig schedule conveys this same diversity and scope. He has toured with a performers that oddly range from String Cheese Incident to KRS-One.
