When I started looking around for info about NOBODY (Elvin Estela), I wasn't surprised to find a distinct lack of chatter about the producer/ DJ. The guy's tag is "Nobody" after all. It's too bad, though. NOBODY is one of the real production talents of our age.
Elvin Estela is a long time musician and DJ first associated with the mid 90s Project Blowed scene in LA that also fostered talents like Aceyalone. His most recent effort is a duo with Niki Randa, called Blank Blue. (Their first gig was in early 2008 at the Los Angeles Architecture and Design Museum, with Daedelus and others.). The album sounds something between Zero 7 and Os Mutantes. Estela has generally described his sound as "psychedelic bass music" that is "subtly heavy," and indeed most of his albums have a weightiness below the rich and melodic textures. He writes strikingly beautiful songs with complicated rhythms that express "heavy-hearted" feeling, almost a longing. NOBODY projects also offer a fresh take on the trip hoppy Bristol sounds that tend to inform much his production feel.
Over the years, NOBODY has toured and worked with some of the industry's premier talent, including members of Beachwood Sparks, Prefuse 73 (aka Guillermo Scott Herren), the amazing Busdriver, The Mars Volta, Battles, Edan, Dntel, and Flying Lotus. He is at the center of the Low End Theory night in LA and dublab.com, both recognized as a major forces shaping both the LA and international electronica/ trip/ hip hop scenes.
