#85 Pop Levi - The Return to Form Black Magik Party
A former member of Liverpool electropop band Ladytron, Pop Levi (Pop is his real middle name) released his solo album, The Return to Form Black Magick Party, in February 2007. The album was recorded in Levi’s native Liverpool, before he and his quartet took up residence on the West Coast. It binds together an abundance of genres to create it's own unique sound - glam rock, blues, psychedelia, rockabilly, pop and folk all mix together to form an addictive album full of great hooks and thumping rhythms.
Many of the songs on Return to Form... are instantly memorable and full of immediate, heavy-hitting tunes, such as the bass-driven psychedelic rock track, "Blue Honey" and the blues-rock "Sugar Assault Me Now".
Internet chatter likes to point to Levi as just a T-Rex knock-off or Marc Bolan reincarnated. Yes, the formula may be similar between the two but Return to Form... is fresh-sounding and inventive with a nod to the past. Return To Form... has been described by Levi himself as a "truly bizarre whirlwind of classic sounds". The album is one long-lasting burst of energy and undoubtedly worth a spot on the Top 100 Albums of the Decade countdown.
