Song of the Day 7/30/08: Ariel Pink - L'estat
Listening to Ariel Pink is like crawling through cobwebs - his music seems to hiccup through an ancient gramophone, wobbling a record around on the power of a frayed belt. "L'estat (According to the Widows)" gives a warped nod to the Beatles, copping (and halving) the chorus of "She Loves You" before flipping it around: "oh, and how she loves that estate." The guitar and organ and drums moan and warp together, like three ghosts dissipating and assuming each other's form in turns. All of this through persistent tape hiss: it's a pop song decayed by time, forgotten, and then resurrected by audio experts. Pink takes lo-fi to its absolute lowest, and the result is haunting.
