Song of the Day 7/3/08: Mogwai - The Sun Smells Too Loud

Mogwai reminds us, once again, that their sweeping post-rock compositions are infinitely more re-listenable than most any other group in the genre. The details in "The Sun Smells Too Loud" are intricate and off-center, rolling in from different angles to keep you hooked onto the track from the start. Take what sounds like a sample reversal on the opening guitar - nothing now to the music world, but impressive here in its subtlety, the way the tail seems to flip back on itself like a floundering fish. Rather than moving toward predictable and posturing orchestra surges at the height of their tracks, Mogwai manages to span a broader emotional range by keeping the small stuff in the background and rolling them out in turns to play off of each other. This unhurried complexity is why Mogwai is perched at the top of their genre.
