Noise Pop '08: Opening Night Party

Noise Pop 2008. Here we go.

Tuesday, February 26th – Opening Night Party w/ Tempo No Tempo and Mika Miko

The festivities kicked off on Tuesday night at The Rickshaw Stop. The Opening Night Party built a line of hipsters, journalists, and industry randoms, which snaked around the block and filled the air with slithering whispers from those waiting to mingle, dance, and drink the night away. Blowfish provided complimentary sushi and an extremely generous someone provided an open bar for the first hour. I tipped my drink to those peeps many times that night.

Tempo No Tempo opened up the live music portion of the night to a surprisingly attentive crowd, being that it was designed to be more of a mingling party. Spawning from the UC Berkeley dorm rooms, Tempo No Tempo has a sophisticated indie look, like that of The Decemberists, but unleashes a more rockin’ sound, like that of Maritime.

Up next was Mika Miko, the Los Angeles-based, punk-rock darlings that bring the Schlitz to the waltz. Contrary to current punk-rock, which can be softened by “emo” tendencies and glamour, Mika Miko make their music raw as it was originally in the ‘70s. And what’s best is that these four girls seemed to be having the time of their lives. Erratic dancing, grinding rhythms, and piercing screams are enough to ignite any crowd, but with these Noise Pop-sters, Mika Miko incited a riot in their minds, providing a glimpse of the raucous that would ensue over the course of the six-day festival.

Overall, San Francisco has a much more welcoming population and atmosphere than New York City and thus, the Noise Pop crowd at the Opening Party seemed to be much warmer than the crowds at CMJ. The quaintness of The Rickshaw Stop facilitated the friendly banter between badge-holders and VIP guests. The free beer certainly played its part in that, as well. Nevertheless, rubbing elbows with various elbows was quite natural and it was a perfect introduction to Noise Pop 2008.
