The National: All The Wine

The National are now riding the waves of critical acclaim for their fourth album, Alligator, following last years stunning ep, Cherry Tree. Found on this already-being-draped-with-album-of-the-year-honors release is, "All The Wine" -- a song steeped in the atmosphere found straight across Alligator. It's led by guitars chiming and softly twanging, then the drums step in, knocking the singer, Matt Berninger, out of his chair to tell us "... i'm put together beautifully... i'm a perfect piece of ass, like every Californian... so tall i take over the street, with high beams shining at my back... a wing span unbelievable, i'm a festival, i'm a parade.... and all the wine is all for me...". One of the best lines in the song is "... i'm a birthday candle in a circle of black girls...".

Imagine the dark Scottish murk of Arab Strap re-tuned, re-jigged, through American eyes, ears, hands, and mouths... until it resembles nothing but itself, all the while Berninger and that voice are swaggering through the oil black swamps of everyday lives and loves. This is The National.
