Song of the Day 5/4/09: John Vanderslice - Too Much Time
John Vanderslice is really fucking rad, and criminally under-appreciated--or perhaps undermentioned / fawned over? It's not just that J-Van (damn straight he's cool enough for a lame nickname) is a local Bay Area hero, but we, I mean, he, is celebrating the release of his seventh full length album, which is no small feat by any standards. J-Van's latest, Romanian Names, is sweet and a bit melancholy, and proves yet again, that damn can his voice carry an entire melody. "Too Much Time" is the perfect embodiment of the introspective nature of Romanian Names, which is similar to 2004's Cellar Door. Let's not forget that J-Slice (no?, J-Van better?), is also known as one of the nicest dudes in music, wearing his nice-guy crown and reining over Tiny Telephone studios in San Francisco. For his seventh album, J-Veezy (best yet!) leaves the label that has been home to his six previous releases, Barsuk Records, for Texas-based Dead Oceans. Unsure of what sparked the move, Dead Oceans has seen some good releases lately from These Are Powers, Bishop Allen and Phosphorescent, so J.V. is in good company. Take "Too Much Time" for a couple spins around the block, and by the time J-Viddy (too much?) croons "freedom is overrated" you will be fawning along with us.
