BioIn early 2001, Dark Theory members Taron Benson and Voodo Fe'Mathelier developed an alternative hip hop project called Phoenix and the Shadow that uses the aggressive drum patterns of Drum&Bass, the Caribbean undertones of Reggae, Afro Punk, and dub to create what they describe as the "Trippy Star" sound. This concept is the main ingredient of Phoenix and the Shadow's self-produced, self-titled album.
Backed by a powerful four-piece band, Phoenix and the Shadow's live performances include opening for such acts such as Run DMC, Meshell Ndegeocello, Naughty By Nature, and The Streets at the world-famous Filmore West in San Francisco as well as playing at magazine release parties for MASS APPEAL Magazine. Their previous independent EP, DIFFERENT THEY THINK, received wide attention and reached #32 on CMJ charts while their passionate, rage-induced song, "Existence," is featured on FLO MAGAZINE's compilation CD.
This Brooklyn based duo has the songwriting ability to turn common, relatable situations into clever creative songs that are infectious and often sexualy vigorous. With PHOENIX AND THE SHADOW, lyricists Mathelier and Benson meld their multi-faceted personalities into a steamy love letter to music itself "imbued with... refreshing next-school vision," as commented by music writer Brian Coleman for CMJ.
