BioWith influences as far reaching as 70's glam rock and 80's new wave to punk, garage and soul- Ben Grimes (guitar, lead vocals), Harry Anderson (bass), Ryan Shank (drums), and Kenn Jankowski (guitar, keyboard) have set out to awaken the spirit of American rock music.
Ben and Ryan, the band's founding members, are first cousins born six weeks apart in 1978. They began making music together in grade school, during school vacations and family visits. Their collaboration took root at age fifteen when Ben moved first to Kansas City and then, a few years later, to Springfield, MO. Beginning in 1999, Ben and Ryan went through nearly three years of ever-shifting lineups, names, and repertoire while they honed their chops on the local live circuit.
In late 2001, they recruited Kenn Jankowski, first as a bass player, then as a keyboard player, and finally as lead guitarist and keyboard player. In addition to his multi-instrumental and arranging abilities, Kenn has a knack for melodic hooks and is the group's resident tech-head.
When Ben and Ryan saw bassist Harry Anderson with a popular local band called Reflector, they immediately recognized his talent. In his teens, Harry had studied jazz, music theory, and classical arrangement. While still in high school, he composed and annotated an original composition that was performed by the Kansas City Symphony.
They played their first show on a college campus in Joplin, MO to about 30 people, and thus The Golden Republic was born. With their unique songwriting and powerful live performances, they have steadily built a dedicated following throughout the Midwest. They have since completed extensive tours with Sondre Lerche, Idlewild and Nada Surf to a huge critical reaction and are set to hit the road again later this year (with label mate Sondre Lerche).
