Bio
A Michigan native currently living in New York City, Sufjan Stevens is a graphic designer, an amateur seamster, a crocheter of ski caps, and a writer of short fiction.Having recently completed the masters program for writers at the New School for Social Research, Sufjan is now working on a collection of short stories.
While still an undergraduate student at Hope College (Holland, Michigan), Sufjan played whistles for the Michigan folk quartet Marzuki, which had two LP releases and a small following in Western Michigan, Nashville, and New York City.
He is responsible for the premiere Asthmatic Kitty release "A Sun Came," a collection of 4-track songs recorded during his tenure with Marzuki. More recent projects with Asthmatic Kitty include a collection of instrumental songs inspired by the animals of the Chinese Zodiac, as well as songs for the benefit compilation, "To Spirit Back the Mews." Sufjan has produced music for various independent film and dance productions. More recently, he finds work producing commercial music for websites and radio. His songs have appeared on several international benefit compilations with such artists as Frank Black, Sixteen Horsepower, Ida, Songs: Ohia, Over The Rhine, and Royal City.
