The drawback of becoming a cult musical sensation is that all those embarrassing bands and recordings from your past get dredged up and unleashed upon a curious fanbase. Thankfully, Colin Meloy's first band Tarkio is not too far-removed from his indie-superstar outfit the Decemberists (albeit more reminiscent of the college-pop of the Go-Betweens), and Mr. Meloy's early work with the band is seeing a double-disc reissue titled Omnibus from Kill Rock Stars on January 24. Tarkio's full-length I Guess I Was Hoping For Something More and EP Sea Songs For Landlocked Sailors were released in limited numbers, most likely snatched up by every last hipster in their native Montana by now, so the chances of having found such material previous to Omnibus was next to impossible. Along with the collected LP and the EP, Omnibus also throws in demo recordings and some other rare goodies, including a scanned copy of the rejection letter from Arista Records in the liner notes. Decemberists die-hards can stop hyper-ventilating now, or pining in 1890s prose, or whatever the hell it is they do. (Story by: Paul Haney CMJ)
