After a busy 2002 that marked their first tour and CD EP release, The Paper Hearts returned to the studio for 2003’s full-length, Plans for the Past on Heartshape Records. This year, the Fayetteville-based band is back on the road supporting their 5-song Hard to Smile EP which was also recently released on Heartshape Records.
The release of the new EP caps an eventful year-long span that saw singer/guitarist Todd Gill relocate to Memphis, TN to join Tigerstyle Records band, Lucero, while singer/guitarist Aaron Weidner moved to Kansas City to form The New Tragedies and drummer Andrew Rudd headed to Seattle to play with Aqueduct.
The dust settled in 2004 when Gill left Lucero to reform The Paper Hearts along with orginal members, Bryan Brown and Michelle Obana. With the addition of Damon Singleton on drums and the temporary reuniting with Weidner, the band returned to the studio in February, recording Hard to Smile with engineer Dan Holopoff at The Enchanted Unicorn in Avoca, Arkansas. The result is a genre-bending blend or roots-rock, fire and soul that has sparked interest from Alternative Press magazine along with several other new and exciting opportunities which will unfold as the summer comes to a close.
