"I am a bit of a sucker for albums with a really good story behind them. When I read the one-sheet that came along with Goldrush's latest album, Ozona, I had to give the disc a listen. I had heard "Let You Down" before, so the band's name rang a bell, but it was the story that put this CD on the top of my must listen list. The band was en route to the South By Southwest Music Festival, when their tour bus broke down in the tiny town of Ozona, Texas. Spending a day shooting firearms with small town locals, downing plenty of beer and bourbon along the way had an impressive impact on the band's new album. These five men from Oxford, England have combined the best elements of British pop with Americana, making an album just as catchy as it is intelligent. "Wait For The Wheels" is the album's opening track, encapsulating the qualities of a perfect pop song. It has a sunny exterior with the heart of a whiskey-chugging truck driver (who doesn't drink and drive, of course). Big guitars and an addictive chorus never overpower the small town soul of the song. Frontman Robin Bennett's vocals teeter between Nick Drake and Lou Barlow on the twang-filled shuffle of "Jupiter". In an ideal world "Let You Down" would be a radio smash. I hate to toss in a comparison to Coldplay, as that is overused and is just too easy, but the chorus is the indie equivalent of a classic Chris Martin down-tempo melody. "Each Moment In Time" was given a booster shot of sonic splendor by the world's busiest producer, Dave Fridmann. The distorted drums and keyboard blips make the perfect skeleton for this piano-driven masterpiece, which is easily my favorite track on the record. "Come On Come On" picks up the tempo, sounding almost like Elbow on Prozac. Goldrush should be the next big thing. Their record overflows with brilliantly catchy songs that will appeal to fans of music ranging from Wilco to Keane. Pop music can still be satisfying when it is done the right way, and Goldrush does just that. Open up a bottle of Jack Daniels and soak in this outstanding record." -Chip Adams, TRIPWIRE
